The path up to Nepeta's cave has been carefully shoveled free of snow.

(Okay, not so much "carefully shoveled" as "joyfully blasted". If there's one thing laser claws are good for that isn't fighting, it's carving through annoying stuff that's in your way. There are a few vitrified and/or half-melted fragments of rock lining the path. Don't worry; none of them are still steaming.)

Up close to the cave mouth, two huge cats have been sculpted out of snow in guarding positions, one on either side of the path such that any visitors will have to pass between them. They look incredibly adorable menacing.

Invited guests are welcome! Uninvited guests will probably be warned off before the cave's automatic defense systems kick in.

Come on in! There's a handy pile to drop coats and other winter outerwear, and a frankly huge eat mesa (or "table" if you want to be all fancy and blueblooded about it) to put food offerings on.

...it shouldn't surprise anytroll that Tyler's the first to arrive and purrrrfectly on schedule. His wandering mouthful of angry teeth is just at his heels, and currently occupied with chewing on something made out of bike chains. And he's wearing the Jacket-modus!

Honestly, between the jacket, his power ranger armor, and the hat Rarity gave him on Lunastice last year, he doesn't really need all that much winter wear.


...just let him have a few seconds to starrrrrre at those sculpted lionnesses at the front.

It's kinda hard to describe what roasted barnacles look like without being obscene in some way. On the bright side, he'll tell anyone who asks that they taste like sirloin. And, yes, he's tried them. Not these specific two, but.

Hey, did you know giant scorpions came in white? Ellen's met two of them so far in her life, and both of them are dead. The poison glands went to the trolls ahead of time so they could be properly prepared, but Ellen took the step of getting what meat she could out of the claws and roasting that up with some seasonings she got from Milliways. Since scorpion meat's kind of inedible for humans, she also took the step of preparing something similar from a mirelurk that made the mistake of trying to attack Dogmeat.

(She's labeled both dishes.)

She's wearing her Vault suit at the moment, but General Chase's overcoat is on the coat pile for whenever it's time to go outside again.

The Vance-Freeman family is here. All of it. Husband, wife, both children, and a small posse of robots in tow. (What is the collective noun for a group of robots, anyway? If there isn't one, there should be.) Alyx is carrying Hope; Gordon is carrying Eli; and D0G is carrying a basket with a variety of baked goods inside.

We hope you like zucchini, because it features rather prominently in the dishes they brought.

Duo arrives in a long, black wool coat, braid swinging behind him. He's carrying a big, rattling bag.

"Dang," he says upon sight of the snow cats. The 'shoveling' job was also impressive.

Kanaya's bringing up the rear of all the arrivals, having stayed behind in the bar to usher everyone through the window before going though herself.

Bundled in a warm jacket, and having actually switched to a pair of pants and proper shoes, her hands are devoid of any sort of dish. That's okay, though, since she helped prepare most of the food that the guests haven't brought.

Karkat arrives late. He is a busy guy, with a lot going on, especially after not having a body for a few weeks. Stuff to do, things to poke, sylladexes to rebuild, dumb non-holidays to scoff at. He definitely hasn't been up to anything seasonal.

Although for some reason his greasy dishevelled black hair and marginally-less greasy and disheveled black corduroy jacket are dusted with snow. What's that about?

Aradia manages to be late and exactly on time simultaneously, in the way that only time travellers can. She brought a box of candied beetles! And she seems to have turned up wearing one of those floppy red hats with white fur on and a pompom that the humans like at this time of year.

Hanging Out

The thing about a holiday where you stay awake through your usual sleep cycle: there has to be something to do to kill all that time.

In the corner over that way there's a medium-sized screen running troll movie classics, although it could probably run human movie classics if pressed to. In that other corner there's a pile of furs to flop in and tell stories or play word games.

There's also snacks. No, really, a ridiculous amount of snacks.

Shephard's kind of conflicted here. He heard the part about staying awake through a whole cycle and brought his sticks and a practice drum pad from Bar, because bringing a proper drum set is awkward and because the Stomp approach to percussion requires elements the trolls aren't gonna go for. Problem is... babies. You don't wake babies. Not unless you want their momma to tear out your trachea, which he really doesn't wanna have happen.

The sun is just setting outside, which means it's time for the festive dinner/breakfast/whatever to commence! The centerpiece is the result of Nepeta's latest hunt: a giant roast of ... something implausibly large, but probably of terrestrial origin. Or at least it smells okay to anyone here who happens to be of terrestrial origin.

Wonder what everybody else brought.

Twilight Sparkle couldn't make it to the party, but, as promised, she left some food for the feast: a quart jar of rainbow-striped jam and two loaves of fresh-baked wheat bread to spread it on.

Duo is carefully setting up the contents of his bag. Chili in a crockpot, and he also brought some sort of portable power source for it. Because who knows what troll caves use for power...

Also, fresh crusty bread.

Tyler's got his contributions set up on a warming plates, with a glass lid on top to keep the heat on. Few people like eating mac and cheese cold after all. (unless you happen to be the hostess who WANTS ALL THE CHEESE)

He brought three pots of different mac and cheese, one's the mac and cheeseburger, the mom's veggie special, and the five cheeses blend. With some cans of tuna opened in case anyone wants to mix that into their bowl.

Kanaya still isn't quite sure what to make of snow, having grown up in the desert and mostly stayed clear of it in Milliways.

So, for now, she's not engaging of the strifes, choosing to stay on the sidelines for the moment and observe.

This is the last part of Midsweep's Vigil: watching the sun come up to close the day, and then immediately fleeing its terrible rays to hunker down indoors and sleep.

Anyone who feels like staying here to sleep is welcome; there's lots of fur rugs to sprawl out on, and cushions and stuffed plushies if you feel the need for anything softer.

If you'd rather head on down the mountain and back in the direction of the bar, better hurry and say goodbye to Nepeta before she topples over from exhaustion.
